The Golden Triangle in Iceland - or was it a circle?

 We get asked a lot about the Golden Triangle in Iceland. We’d be evil if we told you that it’s a thing. It’s not. You probably meant to search for the Golden Circle! It’s Iceland’s most popular route and consists of three stops:

·       Þingvellir National Park. With beautiful scenery, a lake, lava fields, a waterfall and the famous Almannagjá gorge. Þingvellir is a national treasure, full of magic and history.

·       Gullfoss waterfall. A very impressive waterfall. It’s wide and has a water flow of 140 cubic meters (4,900 cu ft.) per second in the summer. 

·       Geysir geothermal area. A unique natural wonder. Not only is Strokkur (the biggest, active geyser in the area) beautiful. The whole area is very interesting as well.

Why is the Golden Triangle not a thing in Iceland?

Good question. People are so used to the old Golden Circle route that it has become a classic. We have a few suggestions for the Golden Triangle and who knows, maybe you can start a trend. It could be something like:

The Geothermal Golden Triangle:

·       Hellisheiði Geothermal power plant – the Blue Lagoon – Hveragerði Geothermal Park

Or:

The Historical Golden Triangle:

·       The Settlement Center Exhibition in Borgarnes – Leif Eiriksson’s farm, Eiríksstaðir – Snæfellsjökull’s Visitor Center

These would make excellent day tours. The historical one might be a little long, but you’d get to see a big part of Snæfellsnes as well. Leif Eiríksson’s farm is an absolute blast, especially if you have children with you on the trip. Since it’s a living museum, you´ll experience how the Vikings lived in the old days. You´ll see a long-fire and be entertained by actors in Viking costumes.

So, when you rent a car from us, be a little adventurous and make up your own Golden Triangle in Iceland. We’d love to hear about it.
